If you see Damon Allison out and about in Southwest Michigan, you shouldn’t be surprised to hear him referred to as “coach.” With his proven success on one of the nation’s premier basketball stages (or we say should say “courts”), Damon’s coaching philosophy for his Amateur Athletic Union basketball team is centered on building relationships. His philosophy is this: “While you must run your team through tough rebounding drills and defenses over and over again, a winning team will, first and foremost, grow great relationships. Only then will the scoring and winning ultimately take care of itself!”
Beyond his coaching expertise, Damon’s previous work as a teacher in the Kalamazoo Public Schools system has afforded him experience coaching all ages, from elementary students to existing teachers. Today, Damon is focused on accelerating businesses in our community as an integral part of the Southwest Michigan First jobs team. Damon calls upon his years of coaching experience to problem solve, grow jobs and build relationships with existing businesses in Southwest Michigan.
Damon and his wife, Chelsea, stay in shape by keeping up with their four young children and their many sports activities. In the summer, the Allisons spend their weekends on the beach at their family cottage in South Haven, Michigan – which they completely renovated from a fixer-upper to a beautiful vacation destination. Off the court, Damon also loves to grill out and play a competitive game of euchre.
“Don’t measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished with your ability.”
– John Wooden
